Drinking from the goblet of the senses (12 Kalis #2)

This is the second Kali in a series on the 12 Kalis, read more about the concept behind the series…
The first Kali was Sṛiṣṭikālī – first expansion – creation in the cycle of objectivity.

The second Kali: Rakta-kālī – drinking from the goblet of the senses.

Protection in the cycle of objectivity. The second expansion*.

The second Kali, from the series of 12 Kalis, is drinking the nectar of subjectivity (being) with all its ups and downs and intoxications and yet she remains in balance – equilibrium – protecting in the state of objectivity. The veins represent the nadis that connect all the little yogis inside and outside of the body. Like the roots of a tree, they communicate with one another (union).

Here is the verse from the Ancient Kramastotra, written by Abhinavagupta,** and its translation by Lilian Silburn…

2. Raktakālī.

महाविनोदार्पितमातृचक्र-

वीरेन्द्रकासृग्रसपानसक्ताम् ।

रक्तिकृतां च प्रलयात्यये तां

नमामि विश्वाकृतिरक्तकलीम् ।।२।।

mahāvinodārpita mātṛi cakra-

virendrakā sṛig-rasa pāna saktam /

raktī kṛitāṁ ca pralayātyaye tāṁ

namāmi viśvākṛiti rakta kālīm // 2 //

Salutations to Rakta-kālī who appears as the universe. With the host of Siddhas and Yoginīs*** it is She who is fond of quaffing the blood-nectar of the subjective wheel which is offered to Her with excessive happiness when dissolution has totally disappeared!

* Each of the twelve Kalis is called avikasaor expansion, because this universe is not created in the sense of being made from something. It is simply the expansion of Lord Shiva’s own nature. ~Swami Lakshmanjoo, Abhinavagupta’s Tantraloka.
** Though it is generally accepted that the author of the Ancient Kramastotra is unknown, Swami Lakshmanjoo indicated that the author may have been Abhinavagupta, the illustrious Shaiva Master who lived from 924 to 1020 C.E.
Abhinavagupta wrote in great detail about Shakti, the feminine principle in his Tantraloka, 4th Ahnika as revealed by Swami Lakshmanjoo (Archives of the Lakshmanjoo Academy, publishing anticipated in 2021).
