Encaustic painting, also known as hot wax painting, involves using heated beeswax to which colored pigments are added. The liquid or paste is then applied to a surface—usually prepared wood, though canvas and other materials are often used.

Painting with wax and pigments was so much fun but also a bit cumbersome with a lot more tools that acrylic paint requires. I didn’t do many paintings that way. This one I really love because I painted it as a reminder of a little bird I took care of until it could fly. I also love the intensity of the colors when using pigment mixed with wax. It was the perfect medium for the vibrant and colorful fledgling.
